Run Eight and Sand
Eight_and_Sand_11x13_111421.jpg

In the Fall of 1975, a trio of General Electric U33C locomotives lead a D&H train as it assaults Belden Hill Northbound out of Binghamton, NY at Nolan Rd. The locomotives are in the eight notch and the engineer applies traction sand to the rails in an all out effort to gain momentum on the steep grade. I all likelihood there are two or three ALCO locomotives pushing on the rear. D&H No. 753 is one of three U33Cs that the D&H acquired through a trade with the Erie-Lackawanna RR for a trio of SD 45 locomotives.

Little Starrucca
Little Starrucca.jpg

Three Alco C628s lead a northbound freight train across the steel viaduct near Thompson, PA on the D&H's Penn Division. The viaduct, know as Little Starrucca, spans a ravine and small creek and a few miles ahead lies the more notable stone arch Starrucca viaduct. Freshly fallen snow blankets the scene in this early morning view as the lead locomotive plows its way across the structure. Today there is little to remind us of the Penn Division and this incredible structure.

Red Rocks

The Delaware and Hudson's Laurentian journeys southbound through the Red Rocks area along Lake Champlain south of Plattsburgh, NY. The blue water of Lake Champlain provided the inspiration for the D&H's color scheme. Today, Amtrak's Adirondack traverses this route between New York and Montreal and adds a dome car in the fall for the added enjoyment of their travelers. Though the PA's are gone the scenic splendor still exists.

Horsepower

Three Alco C628s with more than 10,000 combined horsepower slowly move a train up Belden Hill in Upstate New York past the the Genesee Beer billboard featuring 12-horses of its own. It's the late 1960s and the Genesee sign dates back to another era when glass beads were embedded into the sign letters to make them reflective at night when lit by motorists headlights.

The Laurentian

It's the summer of 1968 and a single Alco PA is on the point of the Laurentian as it makes its station stop at Fort Edward, NY. The station agent is loading sacks of mail onto the RPO car and as the passengers have make their way ton board. Within a few minutes the engineer will notch up his engine and the train will continue its journey toward Albany. Fort Edward is still a station stop for Amtrak's Adirondack, but the PA's and D&H itself are both long gone.

Cobleskill Coal Company

Three relatively new ALCO C-628's rumble by the old Cobleskill Coal Company building in Cobleskill, NY in the winter of 1966. A passing winter storm covered the ground with fresh powder as the monster diesels from Schenectady kick up the snow on the descending grade. The diesels are long gone along with the D&H Itself. The Norfolk Southern Railroad now runs past what's left of the remnant of the former coal company building.

Sharks on BNW-3

It's the Fall of 1975 and the D&H sharks are on the point of BNW-3 westbound on the Lehigh Valley's Auburn Branch and about to duck under NY State Route 17 near Waverly, NY.  In a few short miles, it will hand its cars off to the Lehigh at Sayre, PA.  BNW-3 (Boston to Norfolk & Western) handled New England traffic destined for Buffalo in direct competition with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad whose tracks can be seen on the embankment in the distance.

Penn Division Special

This scene represents one of the many special passenger excursions pulled by the D&H's famous ALCO PAs on the Penn Division between Scranton, PA and Oneonta, NY.  The D&H PA Locomotives never regularly operated on the D&H's Penn Division, but in October of 1974 PA's 18 and 17 pulled a special train under the massive Starrucca viaduct at Lanesboro, PA just as the tail end of an Erie-Lackawanna train passes overhead.

Belden Hill Pushers

Belden Hill is a torturous 16-mile climb from Bevier St. Yard in Binghamton to the summit at Tunnel, NY. Virtually every D&H northbound train out of Binghamton required helpers pushing on the rear of the train. In this scene, it's the summer of 1975 and sharks are pushing hard on the rear end of BM-1 as they assist in moving 7,000 tons of freight toward the summit on a hot, hazy day.  The engineer notches out the throttle and adds the thrust of 3200 horsepower to the rear of one of the D&H's wide-vision cabooses.
