Saltillo_110421.jpg

Saltillo, PA is a small town nestled in the Allegheney Mountains at about the mid-point along the East Broad Top Railroad. This scene represents another ordinary day for the coal hauling common carrier in the later years of its operation. A young mom and her son wait to board the rider coach at the rear of a train of coal hoppers as it prepares to stop at Saltillo. Someday tourist trains may once again make their way through this quite town.

Coal Extra 17 North

On a cold October morning in 1953 East Broad Top Railroad No. 17 pauses at the south end of the yard in Orbisonia, PA as the head end brakeman lines the switch for the mainline.  EBT No. 12 sits alongside the coal dock as its tender is replenished and will soon go to work pulling a load of empties southbound back to the mines.  The cold Fall temperatures create plenty of steam as the sun darts in and out on a mostly cloudy day.
