A southbound train of empty coal hoppers crests McMullens summit just north of Orbisonia, PA. It's the Summer of 1956 and the the end of regular operations is approaching for the East Broad Top Railroad. Tourist trains still operate on this stretch of the EBT and maybe someday steam powered trains will operate here again.

Saltillo

Saltillo, PA is a small town nestled in the Allegheney Mountains at about the mid-point along the East Broad Top Railroad. This scene represents another ordinary day for the coal hauling common carrier in the later years of its operation. A young mom and her son wait to board the rider coach at the rear of a train of coal hoppers as it prepares to stop at Saltillo. Someday tourist trains may once again make their way through this quite town.

Coal Extra 17 North

On a cold October morning in 1953 East Broad Top Railroad No. 17 pauses at the south end of the yard in Orbisonia, PA as the head end brakeman lines the switch for the mainline.  EBT No. 12 sits alongside the coal dock as its tender is replenished and will soon go to work pulling a load of empties southbound back to the mines.  The cold Fall temperatures create plenty of steam as the sun darts in and out on a mostly cloudy day.

Aughwick Crossing

East Broad Top Railroad No.18 crosses Aughwick Creek at Pouge, PA on a high steel trestle as it makes its way southbound with a single box car and a string of empty coal hoppers headed back to the mines.  It's the fall of 1953 and in a few short years this narrow gauge coal hauler will make its final trip to the mines.

EBT 17 at Orbisonia

With extra flags flying, EBT No. 17 leads a Northbound Coal train past through the yard and past the shop buildings in Orbisonia, PA in the Fall of 1955. In less than a year, the railroad will be come dormant and await its transformation into a narrow-gauge tourist line 4-years later. in 2020, the railroad has seen its second rebirth as new owners and volunteers rebuild this historic railroad to bring back the glory of years past and celebrate our industrial heritage.
