Lehigh Valley RR Gallery

The Black Diamond Express

In the early 1940s, the Lehigh Valley Railroad's Black Diamond Express featured a new streamlined look with its stylized 4-6-2 steam locomotive and matching heavyweight passenger cars.  In this scene the Black Diamond blasts through Trumansburg New York on its way to New York City.  The next stop will be Ithaca, NY about 14-miles from Trumansburg.  Today very little of this scene remains.

Caywood, NY is located along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, the largest of New York's Finger lakes.  The painting depicts a Lehigh Valley train rolling past one of the many vineyards scattered along the lake's gently sloping hillsides.  Alas, the Lehigh Valley is long gone.  It became a part of Conrail in 1976 and was deemed just another redundant route between New York and Buffalo, NY.

Borders Milk Plant - Dryden, NY

Milk processing plants were scattered throughout the Central New York farming region and during the first half of the 20th century milk trains were plentiful on the Lehigh Valley Railroad as they rushed their products to east coast consumers. Dryden, NY was the home of a Bordens milk plant where 4-6-0 No. 1133 picks up two loads of fresh milk.
